She emphasized the crucial role that children and adolescents play in analyzing, studying, and protecting rights related to nature, territory, and the planet. In response, states need to create effective protection mechanisms that guarantee children the opportunity to engage in activism, express the concerns of their generation, and also consider the future of generations to come.

Javier Arribas Quintana, Minister Counselor of the European Union Delegation in Mexico, said that empowering young people and children is fundamental. He pointed out that putting children and youth at the center is one of the best ways to ensure that policies yield positive results. “It is a matter of social justice, climate justice, and when it affects children and young people, it is fundamental because they are the future generations who will lead and manage the world, and they are the ones who will suffer the most, even though they were not actually at the root of the problem.”

Adriana García, Coordinator of the International Youth Alliance for Family Planning of UNFPA-Mexico, highlighted that the report puts on the table what was experienced at the Climate Change Conference (COP27, held in Egypt from November 6 to 20) and in which a specific Pavilion was created in which girls, boys, adolescents and young people participated presenting projects and placing at the center of the table the problems for the participation of children and adolescents.

She highlighted the importance of moving forward so that at the next Conference, children, adolescents, and young people will have a truly leading role in decision-making through their participation as Official Observers within the Delegations, in order to truly speak of intergenerational justice, generating horizontal dialogues in which different generations participate.

For her part, Sofía Castrejón, a young activist and founder of “Cuidando a Gaia” (Caring for Gaia), considered that the report contributes to centralizing the human rights of children and young people within all climate actions, policies, and negotiations in the region. “It not only recognizes the vulnerability of children and young people to the climate crisis, but also their leadership roles, while holding adults accountable and fulfilling their duty to take action to protect our rights and our future within this crisis.”

The study aims to provide elements for analysis and reflection on the potential of children and adolescents to influence decision-making and the development of sustainable public policies. The presentation was given by Laura Vallejo, a specialist and consultant; Diego and Sara, a child, also participated and contributed their comments to the research. The presentation was moderated by Juan Martín Pérez and Carolina Vargas, coordinator and regional project officer of Tejiendo Redes Infancia, respectively.

OoO

Presentation video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yBa9mdY-1E

The publication is available in
https://infancialatina.org/publicaciones/accion-climatica-desde-la-infancia/
